Our Russian friends

‘And I learned a thing or two from our Russian friends — confuse, alarm, bewilder. If you haven’t got a good case, it’s worth more than dishonest juryman.’

Mr American, p.391, Pan Books, paperback edition 1982.

Every delicious moment

There are a few wakenings in your life that you would wish to last for ever, they are so blissful. Too often you wake in bewilderment, and then remember the bad news you went to sleep on, but now and then you open your eyes in the knowledge that all is well and safe and right, and there is nothing to do but lie there with eyes gently shut, enjoying every delicious moment.

Flashman, p.239, Pan edition, 12th printing, 1979.
