The forgotten brigadier
Historians say that on that one moment, as the Khalsa’s spearhead was rushing at our throat, rested the three centuries of British India. Perhaps. It was surely the moment in which Gough’s battered little army stared certain death and destruction in the face, and whatever may have settled our fate later, one man turned the hinge then and there. Without him, we (aye, and perhaps all of India) would have been swept away in bloody ruin. I’ll wager you’ve never heard of him, the forgotten brigadier, Mickey White.

Waiting at Fort Lincoln
“Well,” says he, “if you should change your mind, just remember, there’s always a good horse, a good gun—aye, and a good friend—waiting for you at Fort Lincoln.” He shook my hand.
“George,” says I earnestly, “I shan’t forget that.” I don’t forget holes in the road or places I owe money, either.

Tedious conversation
‘If you think you were tortured, Colonel Flashman,’ says he, poker-faced. ‘then I congratulate you on your ignorance.’ He put down his cup. ‘I find this conversation tedious. ‘If you will excuse me,’ and he turned away.
‘Oh, sorry if you’re bored,’ says I. ‘I was forgetting – you probably haven’t cut a throat or burned a peasant in a week.’

Never forget any injury
Never you mind; I know my own nature hasn’t changed in eighty years, so why should anyone else’s? And I never forget any injury – I’ve done too many of ’em.
